A king bed looks simple on the showroom floor. One big mattress. One firmness. One price. For some couples, that single mattress is where the trouble starts.
If you and your partner want different things from a mattress, say one of you likes a firm surface and the other prefers something closer to medium, a traditional king forces a compromise. One person may find it too soft, the other too hard.
That is why I think more couples should at least look at a split king.
What A Split King Is
A split king is two twin XL mattresses side by side. Together they make the same footprint as a standard king. You get a full king-size sleeping surface, but each person gets their own mattress.
That setup is the whole point. You can put a firmer mattress on one side and a softer one on the other, so each sleeper picks the feel they prefer instead of settling for one compromise mattress.
In my experience, it can be a good answer when two people sharing a bed have different builds or different comfort preferences. You keep the width of a king and stop arguing over firmness.
Sheets Can Stay Simple
Some people worry that two mattresses will look like two beds, or that the sheets will pull apart. It does not have to be that way.
Two twin XL mattresses take up the same footprint as a standard king, so many people cover them with a regular king sheet set. A king fitted sheet goes over both halves together, and the top sheet and comforter are the same king bedding you would buy for a traditional king. A snug fitted sheet can help keep the halves together, but it will not guarantee they never shift or separate.
You can also use twin XL sheets on each side if you want separate bedding. I like a standard king set so the bed looks and feels like one.
Why I Prefer Coil Mattresses
Mattress construction matters as much as the size.
My own preference is a coil mattress, and specifically a two-sided one that is built to be flipped. Flipping and rotating helps a mattress wear more evenly. Do not assume a mattress can be flipped just because it has coils, though. Many coil mattresses, like many foam and pillow-top designs, are built one-sided, with comfort layers on top only. Those can usually be rotated but should not be flipped. Only flip a mattress the maker says is two-sided, and follow its care instructions.
When two people of different weights share a bed, one side may compress faster than the other. For me, a two-sided mattress that can be flipped and rotated on schedule is one way to help keep the feel more even over time. Ask about it when you shop, and try the firmness options in the store before you buy.
Easier To Move
A traditional king is a big, awkward piece to get up stairs, around corners and through bedroom doors. A split king is two smaller mattresses. Each half is smaller and lighter, which makes it easier to carry.
That matters when you move, rearrange a room or need to clean under the bed. And if you ever need to replace only one side, you can do that without buying a whole new king.
Shop Smaller Makers When You Can
I prefer to buy from smaller mattress makers that use traditional coils and materials. Two examples I point people toward are The Original Mattress Factory and Tampa Mattress Makers.
The Original Mattress Factory says it hand-builds its mattresses and box springs at its 12 U.S. factories, that its innerspring units are made in the U.S., and that its factories are open to the public for tours. Tampa Mattress Makers is a family-owned company that says it handcrafts its mattresses to order in Clearwater, Florida, using USA-made materials, and sells them factory-direct.
Shopping at a showroom lets you compare firmness options side by side, ask about coils and padding, and find out whether a model is two-sided and how it should be flipped or rotated. I would rather do that than buy a mattress in a box online and hope the trial period works out.
That does not mean a national brand is automatically a bad buy. It means you should know what you are sleeping on.
What To Check Before You Buy
Firmness on each side. Have each sleeper lie down on the firmness they think they want, and spend more than a minute there. Each person should feel comfortable and supported in the positions they actually sleep in.
Foundation. A split king needs a foundation or platform that supports two twin XL mattresses. Some setups use two twin XL box springs. Others use a solid platform with a center support. Confirm what the maker recommends and what your bed frame can hold.
Gap in the middle. Two mattresses side by side leave a seam down the middle. Ask the store how its split sets handle it.
Flipping and rotating. Ask whether the mattress is two-sided. If it is built to flip, follow the maker's schedule. If it is one-sided, rotate it as the maker recommends instead.
All-in cost. Two mattresses, a foundation, delivery and haul-away can add up. Get a full price before you buy, not just the mattress price.
Who A Split King Is For
A split king is worth a hard look if:
- You and your partner prefer different firmness
- You argue about mattress feel every time you shop
- You want king width without locking both people into one mattress
- You want a bed that is easier to move than a solid king
- You may want to replace one side without replacing both
It may not be necessary if you both already agree on firmness. In that case, a traditional king can be simpler. Match the bed to the people in it, not to the label on the tag.
Bottom Line
Consider a split king before you default to a traditional king. Two twin XL mattresses let each sleeper choose their own feel.
My preference is a two-sided coil mattress that can be flipped and rotated so it wears more evenly, but check that the model you choose is actually built to flip. A regular king sheet set can make the bed look like one, though it will not guarantee the halves stay together. Expect each half to be easier to move than a single king.
I like smaller U.S. mattress makers that still use traditional coils and materials, such as The Original Mattress Factory or Tampa Mattress Makers, where you can see what the mattress is made from and try it in the store.
A king bed should work for both people in it. For many couples, a split king is a simple way to get there.
